He kept the boxes in a workshop in his basement. His wife knew that he was collecting the pennies, but never truly knew the extent of his collection until it was time to cash them in.
He said his wife would laugh when he would pick up a penny and say it was going towards the mortgage.
The mortgage payment came on April 24, the same day that he and his wife celebrated their 35th anniversary, a date he said was just a coincidence.
About a month before Daigle delivered the pennies, he gave Milford National a heads up.
“They were 100 percent for it,” he said.
Since moving into the home 35 years ago, the couple has raised two kids. They now have two daughter-in-laws and four grandchildren.
He says his messages to his children have been: “If you say your going to do something, you do it,” and “Pennies add up.”
NOTE: YOU have to love the irony of doing this on his anniversary!!! While this is not a foreclosure it is a great story and has many values in the story. One penny alone might not do much – but 800 pounds of pennies gave this man some freedom.
